A corbeled arch is an architectural system of rocks or bricks built into a wall
to support a weight, thus making a strong and durable archway. A Greek citadel needed an entrance way capable of withstanding attack and providing the city with an awe-inspiring gateway. The Greeks created the corbeled gallery to satisfy these conditions. This archway was not only magnificent in its stature and design, but also gave the military a strategic advantage during wartime. This aesthetic culmination of beauty and utility now sits in the hills of Greece as a proud display of the power of art and the importance it wielded on the culture. |
